Forum Shopping and Territorial Settlement in Latin America

October 27th, 2008

Sponsored by the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) and Tulane University’s Center for Inter-American Policy and Research (CIPR) at SAIS, in Washington, D.C.

This workshop proposed to critically examine and assess how Latin American states select among overlapping international institutions in deciding (if any) where to file a petition to solve a territorial or maritime dispute. Specifically, we aim to flesh out, provide constructive criticism, and generally improve the research project conducted by CIPR post-doctoral fellow Arturo Sotomayor on forum shopping in the Western Hemisphere.

The workshop brought together a small number of leading academic experts on inter-American affairs. Through this event we hope to have contributed to the exchanges and contacts that will advance the production and dissemination of knowledge about critical policy issues facing the Americas.
