Mitch Seligson: Citizen Perspectives on Democracy

The Center for Inter-American Policy and Research (CIPR) invites you to examine one of the few surveys of democratic opinion and behavior that covers the Americas — the AmericasBarometer — and its latest findings at a lecture by Mitch Seligson: “Citizen Perspectives on Democracy: A View from the AmericasBarometer Surveys 2010.”

The AmericasBarometer is an initiative of the Latin American Public Opinion Project (LAPOP) founded and directed by Mitch Seligson at Vanderbilt University. These surveys aim to measure democratic values and behaviors in the area using national probabilty samples of voting-age adults. Currently, the AmericasBarometer covers over 20 countries in the region.

Mitchell A. Seligson, Ph.D. is the Centennial Professor of Political Science and Professor of Sociology at Vanderbilt University. At the University of Pittsburgh, he held the Daniel H. Wallace Chair of Political Science and was also director of the Center for Latin American Studies. He has received grants and fellowships from numerous foundations including the Rockefeller, Ford, National Science, Mellon, Howard Heinz, the U.S. Department of Education, USAID and others, and has published over 140 articles and 14 books. He has consulted for USAID, the World Bank, the UNDP and the IADB, and has served on the National Academy of Sciences panel and as an appointed member of the OAS Advisory Board of the Inter-American Program on Education for Democratic Values and Practices. He is also a founding member of the editorial board of the European Political Science Review (Cambridge University Press) and the Journal of Democracy en Español.
