Water Paradoxes: The Atacama Desert as an Extreme Laboratory for Climate, Extraction, and Design

The symposium brings together colleagues from Tulane and Chile across architecture and the built environment, public policy, industry, cultural institutions, and environmental research to discuss how water scarcity, climate stress, and extractive economies are reshaping arid territories, using the Atacama as a case with lessons for other extreme contexts. The program includes a wide range of speakers and perspectives, including former Vice President of Chile Carolina Tohá.

For convenience, here is the flow of the day:

Panel 1 — Water Heritages: Cecilia Puga, Pilar Alliende, and Orlando Hernández Ying (Moderator: Tony Pereira, SCLAS)
Panel 2 — Water Technologies: Mariana Concha, Carlos Foxley, and Ibrahim Demir (Moderator: Margarita Jover, TuSABE)
Panel 3 — Water Disputes: Carolina Tohá and Eduardo Silva (Moderator: Ludovico Feoli, CIPR)
Panel 4 — Water Climates: Priscilla Ulloa, Pedro Alonso, and Annalisa Molini (Moderator: Adam Marcus, CCU)
